Skin Cancer Speech

Skin cancer. Were all aware of it, and we all know the cause and effects of it, Yet many of us do the one thing that is proven to cause skin cancer; tanning. We all hear “tanning is bad for you”, “ Tanning causes cancer” yet many of us still get in the tanning bed and think nothing of it. Not only does tanning cause skin cancer but it also ages your skin, and can cause irreversible eye damage. No matter how you try to justify it, tanning is very harmful and no one should put their body through it. You might remember hearing “ You only get healthy rays in tanning beds” or “tanning beds give you a base tan to keep you from burning”.

This was used by tanning salons when the UVA rays, the ones tanning beds mainly use, were thought to be safe and only UVB rays were the harmful ones. Of course since then we have grown much wiser and research has proven that UVB and UVA rays can cause skin cancer. UVA rays have actually been specifically linked to Melanoma, which is the most serious form of skin cancer. According to the Skin Cancer foundation, Your risk of Melanoma increases 75% when you use the tanning bed before the age of 35. And 71% of tanning bed patrons are actually under that age in the 16-29 range.

Also indoor tanners are 75% more likely to develop melanoma then those who have never tanned indoors. The International Agency for Research on Cancer includes ultraviolet (UV) tanning devices in its Group 1, a list of the most dangerous cancer-causing substances. Even With all of these statistics and information out for everyone to see, there are still millions who use the tanning bed every day. And it’s not just your skin you need to be worried about, ultraviolet radiation is also a major cause of eye cancer as well. Unfortunatly many of the users are aware of these effects but continue to tan regardless.

As if the risk of skin cancer isnt bad enough, there is much more these machines alter as well. If you ask any indoor tanner why they tan there answer will always be the same, to look darker. Little do they know that in the future all of that tanning will actually make them look worse. And it might be a shocker to them that it may happen sooner than they think. According to Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center most tanning bed users feel that turning light skin darker makes them look healthier while in actuality the sun tan means the skin has been damaged.

You ever wonder why when you get out of the tanning bed your skin has that gross smell to it? That smell is actually burnt, dead skin just sitting on you. Melanin is the pigment in your skin that turns the skin dark. It is produced when the skin is exposed to ultraviolet radiation, to pretect it from burning. SO basically youre damaging the one thing that is trying to protect you from burning. Because in reality youre not tanning, youre burning, which gives you the darker look. Also, tanning booths have about 95% UVA light and 5% UVB light. While the 95% UVA light was associated more with the aging of skin then anything else.

Scientist at the Food and Drug Administration and Center for Disease Control have proven that UVA rays penetrate deep into your skin causing significant destruction and loss of skin elasticity. What that basically says it that your skin will have more wrinkles and at a much earlier age, and I don’t know what women would want that. So next time you hop in that tanning bed, try to look a few years down the road and try to picture the condition your skin will be in, just for that tan. Without our eyes we wouldn’t be able to see anything and if we cant see anything living a normal everyday life Is nearly impossible.

Tanning beds have UV levels up to 100 times the amount you would get from the sun, causing serious damage to the internal and external structures of the eye and eyelids. According to the American Academy of Opthalmology, UV damage to the eyes may result in the development of cataracts and macular degeneration, as well as cancer of the uvea, which is the middle layer of tissue under the white of the eye,”. Early signs of age-related eye diseases, including cataract, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration can begin in midlife but often do not noticeably affect your vision until later.

This is why tanning is so serious, because most of the effects don’t occur until later on in life making the tanner believe that it is not currently harming them. Unfortunatly later on in their life they will realize that they were mistaken. Even though you think youre making yourself look better with youre tan, youre actually damaging your body more than you could ever imagine. So avoid the skin cancer, wrinkles, and eye damage, and stop tanning. Its just that easy.
