This paper compares the roles of two nurse managers. The first is Mr. Sam Asara, position-ADON, shadowing experience done on 06/15/12. He has worked for 10 years and Mrs. Flora Gording-Coker, position-managing supervisor, shadowing experience done on 6/18/12. She has worked for 2 years.
Decision-making is defined as a “complex cognitive process often defined as choosing a particular course of action” (Marquis &Huston, 2009, p. 2). Mr. Asara is always quick to decide on calling and replacing the absentee staff members. In Mrs. Gording’s nursing home, supplies have been disappearing for the past few months but she is handling the matter very slowly.
According to Taylor (2011), planning involves setting goals and identifying ways to meet them. Mr. Asara ensures that all nurses perform their roles as expected by reminding them of those roles. Mrs. Gording takes one day at a time because her annual plans for the nursing home are met by the staff members.
Continuous quality improvement
Mr. Asara always talks to his juniors and the patients to find out ways of improving the service delivery at the nursing home. Mrs. Gording dishes out questionnaires to the members of staff about improving the services at the nursing home. However, some of them do not return them for analysis.
Managing ethical/legal dilemmas
Mr. Asara has contracted a law firm that handles all legal issues pertaining to the nursing home. At Mrs. Gording’s nursing home, she tries to deal with the ethical dilemmas by talking to those involved to develop suitable solutions.
There are staff picnics every month at Mr. Asara’s nursing home. This has contributed to the solidarity among the staff members. The staff under Mrs. Gording tries to involve her staff members in company retreats but not all of them are always willing to avail themselves. The ones that show up have developed very strong bonds between them, which have contributed to good quality service provision. Marquis& Huston assert that “maintaining high quality practice depend on successful team building” (2009, p.52).
The employees at Mr. Asara’s establishment receive bonuses for good work. Mrs. Gording awards the ‘employee of the month’ at the nursing home. This motivates her employees.
Care delivery systems
Successful health care organizations begin with quality in evaluating the effectiveness of their care delivery operations (Garber et al, 2010). The care delivery approaches that Mr. Asara employs put the needs of the patients first. Some of Mrs. Gording’s employees treat their patients only when they have time in their hands.
Mr. Asara and his employees know their patients on a personal level. There is constant communication even after treatment to check on their progress. The nurses and doctors also do home visits for some of their patients. The patients at Mrs. Gording’s establishment are treated and discharged. Their recovery progress is not very closely monitored.
Personal analysis of leadership/managerial style most like yours
Both Mr. Asara and Mrs. Gording are good nurse managers. However, there are slight differences in their delivery. Mr. Asara is a perfectionist who leaves nothing to chance and has a well supporting staff body. Their number one concern is satisfying the needs of the patients. Mrs. Gording is a dedicated nurse manager who tries to look after the well-being of her patients and her employees. Some of her strategies are well laid out, nevertheless, she needs to put more efforts into keeping an eye on and her employees and their productivity.
