Nonverbal Activity and Yourself

Nonverbal communication can be recognized as the procedure of communicating with other people through relaying and getting largely visual signals. Information can be conveyed through gesticulation and contact, by body language or stance, by facial signals and eye perception that are all acknowledged categories of nonverbal communication (Kobal et al 156). Whereas talking contains nonverbal paralanguage aspects such as voice pitch, rate, speaking style, volume, and quality, as well as prosodic features such as stress intonation and rhythm. Similarly, written materials also possess nonverbal communication. Conversely, a large amount of studies of nonverbal communication has concentrated on face-to-face communication that is categorized into three major sections: environmental circumstances where the interactions take place, physical qualities among the communicators, and communicators’ conduct during the interaction.

Importance of Non-verbal Communication in Healthcare

With the healthcare sector, communication is a common aspect of the profession. Medical practitioners, their partners and their subordinates communicate on several things including clarifying diagnosis and treatment, consulting patients in decision –making, informing families of developments, handling worried relatives and friends as well as providing advice on the healthy way to live (Marc?ic? & Kobal 34). Dealing with difficult patients is a normal occurrence in most hospitals. Medical staff needs to know how to soothe and pacify patients when they get apprehensive. Doctors and nurses need to communicate effectively with patients that may be experiencing physical or mental complications such as hysteria, deafness or amnesia. Other patients also have various character sets such as being in denial, being angry or guarded. Communication skills can be considered as vehicles thorough the medical actions such as physical examinations to assure the patient will comply within the time and resources that are allocated to them.

Activity-The Silent Film

All the people participating in the activity will be organized into two groups. The first half will be awarded the role of scriptwriters and the other half will be the actors. These responsibilities would be reversed for the second part for the activity. The scriptwriters will be responsible for writing a quiet motion picture. The film will have a storyline that will be acted out without anyone speaking. The actors can start the scene with a normal task such as working or having fun. Other actors will enter the scene after being briefed on the script, but all their actions would be non-verbal. These characters could take up any relevant identity they want. This activity is designed for about 20 people. The objective of the activity is to teach people how to handle speech drawbacks and be able to handle patients with communication problems and cannot talk.

Self-Concept Inventory


Self-concept or self-perspective is the multi-dimensional aspect of a person’s perception of their own self in relation to numerous features for example academics, gender functions and sexuality, race and various others. Personally, I have particularly many items that I can list in this category, but for the purpose of the essay, I shall reduce them to the first 20 items. Physically, I am a tall male student at around 6 feet. I am slightly built, and my weight is 70kg. The main positions that I hold in society are within the religious circles because of my strong conviction in Christianity. I am a student at a national college that harbors other learners from different cultures and countries. I am highly active as the leader of a youth group in the community that is responsible for implementing various societal projects such as neighborhood security, waste management and building of the community social hall.

My overall personal trait is extremely aggressive. I am also assertive and direct in my mannerism toward other people that I around me. I am truly open to new experiences that offer me the chance to learn new things in life. Innately, I am an extrovert so I will prefer to stay around people and social events where I can interact and connect with the rest of the world. I am an agreeable person and prefer to avoid an argument rather than taking sides. I perceive myself as having a high self-esteem about my physical and emotional self. Impulsivity is another personal trait in that I can easily take up new changes and adapt to excel in the new environment. Concerning my existence, I would comment that I am a spiritual being created in the image of God and place on Earth to do his bidding. If there were ten traits that had to be removed from this list, the elimination would start with my existential declarations as I have the perception that they are somewhat abstract and proving them would be impossible. The other items that would be removed form this list would include the physical appearance as this changes over a period as well as my race because, in the new world, interracial contact has been integrated.

In my opinion, if these aspects were to be removed from my self, I would be different and incomplete. Most of these features have been a part of me since birth. They have defined who I am, my choices and my path in life as well as my relationships with other people. It would very difficult for me if I was a female as most of my traits would have embarrassed me and it would have been difficulty for me to make friends. All my personal traits, physical features and hobbies, work together to come up with my own unique self. My aggression and physical state give the impression that I am focused and independent. My determination and interest in academics have helped me advance in education up to the college level. Therefore, every part of my self has contributed towards building the complete unit.

Reflected Appraisal

By reflected appraisal, this refers to the perception that people have of their selves that is influenced by other people’s opinion. Reflected appraisal is closely related to self-esteem in that if the reflected appraisal is negative, the self-esteem of an individual will be low (Avsec 23). Basing my answer on the list of 20 items that formed my self, aggression and being extroverted have been said by many people that I have come to accept these as my traits. The people who stressed these traits repeatedly include my colleagues in college, my family members and my relatives. Whenever I engaged in different activities, they would always commend me for being ready and willing to take up on different challenges without hesitation (Ditzfeld et al 145). They also constantly mentioned that I had contact to many different people hence they considered me an extrovert.

The reason why I agreed to these reflected appraisals was because they were partly true and even though they were not as pronounced like I anticipated, the constant reference to them made them stronger. The idea that all the people I knew, trusted and lived with were able to see something in me meant that part of it was true. Some of these people were my relatives and parents who constantly mentioned these traits. The fact that they were positive traits that people saw in me was enough encouragement for me to incorporate them as part of my traits. The most influential people in my life were my parents and immediate family especially my uncles and aunts. These people have lived with me for a while and want me to me succeed. Therefore, they offer positive feedback on my traits so that I may develop the positive ones and ignore any other traits. Their significance emerges in the fact that they have constantly helped me to develop these traits by offering me avenues to exercise them. Any suggestions or opinions from people that are not close to me do not hold much meaning because they may have no serious intention of helping me better myself.

Social Comparison

Using the initial list as the reference, all my educational achievements, principles and acquaintances were largely influenced by my mentors. Starting from the lower levels of education, my efforts in school were guided by my father who was also a teacher and strongly supported any educational activity that I was engaged in. In high school, my gym teacher was a close friend who guided me. The most influential person was my professor, Mr. Huntington who I strongly admired. Without knowing, I wanted to advance to his level and live a lifestyle similar to his. Therefore, I engaged in most activities to emulate my professor. When I compared myself to other students my age, I thought of myself as being superior because I had amassed more knowledge. Through looking at the list, I have understood a few things about myself. One, I am slightly dependent on other people. I tend to go with other people’s ideas easily if they seem attractive. In the case of my professor, it was because education is deemed valuable and so associating my self with him was equivalent to comparing my self to great people ion society.


In applying the things I have learnt about myself, I have realized that my self-esteem is greatly influenced by the way I perceive the characteristic ad actions that I possess and engage in respectively. I have a high self-esteem because my social comparison is very advantageous and accessible. All of the people who support me are also very trustworthy. In using the Johari window to assess my self, I have discovered few things that I do not know about myself. For example, when I reduced the list to the bare minimum, education and family were not automatically my first priority.
